The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises (RAE), coming 2nd in the 2008 RAE, and was rated as "Excellent" in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.
An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate (at the post-doctoral level) to work as part of a project in the area of data stream management and distributed systems research. The goal of the project is to investigate scalable stream processing architectures for “big data” analytics, especially in the context of multiple data centres (or sites). The research will explore how multiple sites affect data stream management and design new approaches for decentralised data stream processing across a large number of sites. The position is supported by joint funding from the ITA and the EU ICT Labs.
The position offers an exciting opportunity for conducting internationally leading and impactful research, which aims to solve real-world data management and distributed systems problems in the context of large amounts of real-time data. The project will be done in collaboration with partners at IBM Research in the US and leading European universities.
Within the project, the Research Associate will be responsible for generating models for multi-site data stream processing, designing novel stream processing architectures, and implementing and evaluating experimental software prototypes. They will be expected to publicise their research results at premier data management, distributed systems and software systems conferences and journals.
To apply, you should have a solid computing or engineering background. You should also have experience, including a proven publication track-record, related to the following areas: data management, distributed systems, and/or software systems. You should have a PhD (or equivalent) in data management, distributed systems, software systems or a related area. All applicants must be fluent in English.
