University College London – University of Parma Collaborative Project: ‘A New Approach to the Function of the Human Mirror Neuron System’ Applications are sought from postdoctoral research fellows interested in joining a new collaborative project led by Prof Guy Orban (University of Parma, Italy) together with Marco Davare, James Kilner, Alexander Kraskov and Roger Lemon (UCL). The project involves the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate characteristic functions of the mirror neuron system in the human cortex. The project is based on new fMRI studies in Parma, which for the first time have identified the human equivalent of area F5c in the macaque brain, the area in which mirror neurons were first discovered. The study will investigate the cortico-cortical interactions of this area and how they are influenced by features of the actions observed by the subject. They will also look at the behavioural and neurophysiological outcomes of repetitive TMS interfering with the putative human area F5c. Person Qualifications We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual (m/f) with an excellent track record in studying functional aspects of the brain using TMS. Essential -PhD in Neuroscience or related area Skills and Knowledge Essential -Previous experience with transcranial magnetic stimulation of motor cortex -Previous experience with neuromuscular and kinematic recording techniques -Familiarity with CED data collection software (Signal, Spike) -Familiarity with Matlab and other visual stimulus presentation software Desirable -Previous experience with twin-coil TMS techniques. -Experience with computer programming in a high level language -Familiarity with Brainsight neuronavigation methods -Excellent academic record with evidence of independent, creative work Appointment The experimental work will be carried out in the Sobell Department of Motor Neuroscience and Movement Disorders at the UCL Institute of Neurology at Queen Square in London.
