The SENSEable City Lab (SCL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is looking for exceptional candidates to fill multiple postdoctoral positions for the modeling and analysis of complex urban systems ( http://senseable.mit.edu/).
Since its inception, SCL has acquired massive and unique data sets about human behavior in cities all over the world. The Lab has launched a major interdisciplinary initiative to harness these unprecedented data sets in order to better understand cities as ‘complex systems’.
The available data is very broad and includes individual-based telecommunication records, public transport e-ticket records and taxi movements among others.
Job description • Perform basic and applied research, using and extending existing methods and tools. • Actively contribute in the design and initiation of new research projects in the field of complex urban systems. • Integrate specific research findings with the work of all project partners (e.g., Santa Fe Institute, Cornell University, MIT CSAIL). • Present research results at international workshops and conferences. • Co-author articles for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals. • Job location: either Boston or Singapore (as part of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, http://smart.mit.edu).
Requirements The successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, computational sociology (social network analysis), or a related field. Candidates with an interdisciplinary mathematical modeling background are also given particular attention. Experience in handling large-scale data sets as well as complex systems modeling and analysis is a plus. Candidates must present a strong publication record.
• CV and contact information of three referees. • A one-page “expression of interest”, stating the applicant’s interest in working with SCL. • One or two representative publications describing the applicant’s research.
