A Post-doctoral position is available immediately in the field of Fungal Proteomics at the department of Plant Pathology, University of California Davis and the lab of Dr. Ioannis Stergiopoulos. The interdisciplinary research group focuses on the genetics, genomics and evolution of plant-microbe interactions, aiming at gaining a deeper level of understanding on the molecular mechanisms of fungal pathogenesis on plants and host-specificity (http://plantpathology.ucdavis.edu/faculty/Stergiopoulos_Ioannis/).

The project will focus on fungal pathobiology on plants and the proteomic study of host-pathogen interactions in more specific. We aim to use structural genomics and proteomics to understand the role in pathogenesis of fungal proteins secreted during infection of the host. The successful applicant will also focus on the development and application of quantitative LC-MS/MS based methods to the study of host-microbe interactions and the analysis of covalent protein modifications (phosphorylation, acetylation, etc). Solid and proven experience with high throughput recombinant protein expression and purification methodologies for large-scale production of protein samples for NMR (stable-isotope labeling) and X-ray crystallography is an absolute requirement for this position. Experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics is also required. To achieve some of the goals of this project, the candidate will work closely with protein and structural biochemists at the chemistry department of UC Davis. In addition, we offer state-of-the art facilities in protein identification and proteomic profiling through the UC Davis Proteomics Core facilities (http://proteomicstest.squarespace.com/protein-identification/).

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a closely related field and a strong background in state-of-the-art proteomics. Previous working experience with plant pathogens is desirable but not required. Applicants are expected to be highly motivated, reliable and interested to work in an interdisciplinary environment in a young research team. Participation in the preparation of research grant applications for prolonging the project is also expected. The position is for 2 years (1+1 based on performance) but could be extended if additional funding becomes available. Salary is based on experience and qualifications according to UC Davis guidelines.
