Postdoctoral Researcher ATLANTIC Diabetes in Pregnancy (ATLANTIC DIP) programme School of Medicine Ref. no. NUIG 41-12
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed term contract position as a Postdoctoral Researcher within the ATLANTIC DIP research group located at NUIG. The position is for 12 months. The successful candidate will work examining the benefits of a Pre-Pregnancy Care (PPC) programme on the outcome of pregnancy in women with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct a literature review of national and international studies of benefits of PPC. Conduct focus groups to qualitatively establish reasons for non attendance at PPC and develop and pilot suitable information leaflets. Conduct a single arm intervention study of the benefits of PPC in women with pre-gestational Diabetes. Carry out appropriate statistical analysis. Disseminate findings in international peer reviewed journals and at appropriate academic conferences. Finally make recommendations on a regional/national delivery of such a service. The successful candidate would be expected to apply for and complete an MD thesis.
Location: The ATLANTIC DIP research group is located at NUIG with strong integration within hospitals and practitioners in the region. Combined diabetes-antenatal clinics and diabetes pre pregnancy clinics occur in five locations within the region from Letterkenny to Galway. The successful applicant will be expected to attend clinics at these sites as necessary for patient recruitment. The University is close to Galway city, one of the fastest developing cities in Europe that has a thriving centre of culture and commerce with all facilities a modern city offers. The city provides a research-friendly social and cultural environment.
Qualifications:The ideal candidate will be medically qualified and have reached registrar / SpR level. They should display evidence of engagement in previous research with a publication record. Training in statistics would be valuable but not essential. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about the area of research and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills as evidenced by conference presentations and academic publications. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. A driving license is essential.
Note any offer of employment will be dependent on successful Garda Clearance.
