Job Title:  Postdoctoral Fellowship: Biophysics/Engineering
Job Number:  4010079 (Ref.#. HD_00144)
Date Posted:  10/11/2011
Application Deadline: 11/6/2011

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

The Network of Excellence "Systems Microscopy – a key enabling methodology for next-generation systems biology" aims at making systems biology of individual, living cells possible. It uses powerful, newly emerging imaging technologies to capture data, in four dimensions, on dynamic events such as cell division and cell migration. The work within the network at EMBL focuses on developing (i) quantitative 4D imaging and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy as new high-throughput technology platforms to extract biophysical and biochemical parameters from fluorescently tagged functional transgenes in human cells during cell division and (ii) dynamical data-based modeling of cell cycle processes, with many exciting novel questions in applied statistics and bioinformatics linking theory and experiment.

The "Systems microscopy" Network of Excellence is funded under the 7th framework programme of the European Commission and brings together 8 organizations from 7 countries.

The postdoctoral position will be in the field of biophysics/engineering in the group of Rainer Pepperkok. The project aims at the development of automated methods (hardware and software development) to acquire and analyse quantitative image data on multilabeled (up to 10 to 30 different system components) biological samples. The work extends on existing high throughput microscopy systems available and applied in the group. A major challenge of the project will be the development of image and data analysis approaches with the aim to describe quantitatively the behavior of dynamic biological systems.

Qualifications and Experience:
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in physics, biophysics, engineering or a related subject. A strong background in microscopy-based instrument development and/or image and data analysis are essential. Extensive experiences with fluorescence microscopy methods applied to cell biological questions would be an advantage.

An ability to independently take responsibility over his/her own project, as well as strong teamwork and communication skills, are required as well as reliability, attention to the detail and effective time management. Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and multi cultural environment is fundamental to this position. Good communication and presentation skills and fluency in English are expected.

The successful candidates will benefit from the joint activities within the Network, the valuable knowledge transfer among the participants and the stimulating international and interdisciplinary environment at EMBL.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
