中山大学珠三角改革发展研究院是由省规划纲要办和中山大学共建，围绕实施《珠三角规划纲要》的中心任务，立足于现实问题研究，充分利用国内外高校和科研机构专家学者的智力资源，为省委、省政府提供智力支持和决策咨询。珠三角改革与发展研究院根据《珠三角规划纲要》的工作任务与省直部门和珠三角地方政府的工作需求，设立中长期和短期研究项目。所研究领域涉及经济学、社会学、管理学、法学、人文地理等多个学科，组织决策咨询专家库的专家和相关领域的学者参与项目，建立“省实施《珠三角地区改革发展规划纲要（2008-2020年）》专家库”和“珠三角改革发展信息资料库”，为相关政府部门提供应用性研究成果。不仅推动理论研究的深入，同时实现社会领域科研成果的科技成果转化。
根据中山大学与广东省政府的商定,给予研究院4名科研编制。
The Pearl River Delta Reform and Development Institute is co-founded by Provincial Plan Office of Guangdong Province and Sun Yat-sen University aiming to facilitate the implementation of the "Pearl River Delta Plan". The Institute focuses on practical problem-solving and provides intellectual support and decision-making consultation to the Government of Guangdong Province, making full use of expertise from universities and research institutions at home and abroad. According to "the Pearl River Delta Plan" and the needs of provincial government departments and local governments, the Institute will launch short-term and long-term research projects, involving multiple disciplines, such as economics, sociology, management science, law, human geography and so on , as well as experts from related fields. In order to provide applied research findings to related government agencies, the Expert Database in support of the implementation of “the Reform and Development Plan for the Pearl River Delta Region (2008-2020)” and the Information Database for Pearl River Delta Reform and Development will be developed. These will not only promote theoretical research but also facilitate the commercialization of social science research findings.
Sun Yat-sen University and the Government of Guangdong Province decided to set up four research positions in the Institute.
